Injury may delay outdoor season start for Norway's Ingebrigtsen

Norway's 5,000m Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen may have to delay the start of his outdoor season due to problems with his Achilles tendon, the athlete's spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.

Ingebrigtsen had been scheduled to compete at the Bislett Games Diamond League meet in Oslo on June 12.

"He will most likely have to postpone the planned season opening at Bislett because of an issue with an Achilles," Espen Skoland told AFP in a written text.

Ingebrigtsen won gold in the world championships over 5,000m in 2022 and 2023, and claimed the 1,500m and 3,000m titles in Nanjing earlier this year to secure a rare world indoor double.

After pocketing the Olympic gold in the 1,500m in Tokyo in 2021, he also won the 5,000m title at last summer's Paris Games.

The news came as Norwegian prosecutors on Tuesday called for a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Jakob's father Gjert Ingebrigtsen, for allegedly physically abusing Jakob and his sister during their childhood.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen, 59, who used to coach some of his seven children, is accused of physical and psychological violence against the two siblings over a period of 14 years from 2008 to 2022.

He denies the charges against him.

The trial, which began in March, is scheduled to wrap up on May 15.
